THE COPEPOD PARACYCLOPS AFFINIS AS A PREDATOR OF PLANT PARASlTIC NEMATODES
نویسنده
چکیده
In the nematology laboratory in Dakar, plant parasitic nematodes, extracted from infested roors in a Seinhorst's mistifier (1950), were collected in plastic boxes in 1/4 liter of tap water. Once, in 1983, sorne boxes contained smaller numbers of nematodes than anticipated and they also contained copepods swimming in the water. Therefore, these copepods were suspected of ingesting nematodes. The copepods in water were very active and their direct individual handling was very difficult. However, the addition of phenoxy-2-ethanol to a concentration of 0.2 % anesthetized fully and reversibly these animais.

Predation vulnerability of planktonic copepods: consequences of predator foraging strategies and prey sensory abilities
We investigated the vulnerability of 2 copepod species (Eurytemora affinis and Temora longicornis) to predation by predators with different foraging modes, three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus juveniles and mysid shrimps Neomysis integer. Copepods were videofilmed escaping from predators and from an artificial flow field, and the results were used in a model of hydrodynamic disturban...
متن کاملTrade-Offs between Predation Risk and Growth Benefits in the Copepod Eurytemora affinis with Contrasting Pigmentation
Intraspecific variation in body pigmentation is an ecologically and evolutionary important trait; however, the pigmentation related trade-offs in marine zooplankton are poorly understood. We tested the effects of intrapopulation phenotypic variation in the pigmentation of the copepod Eurytemora affinis on predation risk, foraging, growth, metabolic activity and antioxidant capacity. Using pigme...
متن کاملPredator avoidance by nauplii
We examined anti-predation strategies in relation to motility patterns for early and late nauplii of 6 species of copepods (Calanus helgolandicus, Centropages typicus, Eurytemora affinis, Euterpina acutifrons, Acartia tonsa and Temora longicornis). Remote detection and escape abilities were quantified in siphon flows. Nauplii respond with distinct escape jumps at speciesand stagespecific averag...

Noncanonical GA and GG 5′ Intron Donor Splice Sites Are Common in the Copepod Eurytemora affinis
The noncanonical 5' intron donor splice sites GA and GG are exceedingly rare in described eukaryotic genomes; however, they are present in ∼12% of introns in the genome of the copepod Eurytemora affinis Failure to recognize the high frequency of these donor sites compromised the modeling of genes in this newly sequenced genome, including 10 conserved ionotropic glutamate receptor (GluR) family ...
